This park was established to protect one of the last unspoiled
coastal wetlands on the Atlantic Coast and to preserve historic
and prehistoric sites within the area.

Walk through sand pines, saw palmettos and live oaks that emerge
from ancient sand dunes created 120,000 years ago on a 4,000--foot
boardwalk. This is a major stopover for spring and fall migratory
birds.

28,000-acres of wilderness with 19 miles of frontage on the St.
Johns River. Recreational activities including hiking, primitive
camping (reservations required), nature study, horseback riding,
fishing, mountain biking and limited hunting with a special permit.

The Playhouse produces 6 major theatrical productions (drama,
comedy & musicals) every year. Anyone interested in theater is
invited to add their skills and to try out for productions. Emma's
Attic produces shorter, more experimental plays.
The Rising Star Theater is for youths grade 6 to high school age.
Children's Theatre Arts provides classes for grades 1 through
5 and Summer Theatre for grades 2 through 8. The Theater hosts
a variety of community events throughout the year.

The park is named for a species of rare Torreya tree that occurs
only on the bluffs along the Apalachicola River. This once plentiful
tree was nearly destroyed by disease in the early 1960s and may
still be doomed to extinction
